Wine& Wellness Wednesday: Green Up Your Plate!

There are two possible perspectives on the title to this week’s #winewellnesswednesday.

One refers to being environmentally conscious with the choices you make about what you eat.

One refers to making good choices about how many vegetables (and fruits!) you eat on a daily basis.

I’ll touch on both, but honestly? My perspective for today is how incredibly easy it is to add more green stuff to your meals on a daily basis.

Let’s talk environmentally conscious. Organic food uses fewer pesticides and chemicals, so it’s better for the environment to eat organic. It’s not always economical, but it is a good plan if you can do it. Local foods require less transportation, so you’re not contributing to pollution and using up fossil fuels for those semis that move food from place to place. Those are just two ways to be more environmentally conscious and green up your plate.

Now, I want to talk vegetables (and fruits, too). I have recently been adding a handful of snap peas to my lunches and dinners. That preview pic with this post? Yep. It’s a pizza. (It’s a gluten-free pizza, of course!) Yep. That’s Parmesan dust on my pizza. And YEP. That’s a tomato salad with Epicure balsamic dressing next to the pizza. AND they’re homegrown tomatoes, so they didn’t have to be transported other than from my garden into the house! Another option I love? Snap peas. Crunchy, and sweet, and green, and fresh, and delicious, they’re an excellent addition to any meal. Are you making scrambled eggs? Sauté some peppers, onions, and spinach together before adding the eggs. Voila! More veggies in your breakfast! Making a soup? Add spinach or kale toward the end of cooking. Making a smoothie? Add greens like kale or spinach for a little different nutrient punch. The governmental guidelines on how many servings of fruits & veggies you need every day vary based on multiple criteria, but everyone will benefit from eating green.

How do you green up your plate? What will you add to your grocery list this week from the farmers’ market to include a few more veggies on your plate? Take a pic of your greened-up lunch and show me!

Cheers! Here’s to your health!
